Newspaper Essay

‘Differently newspapers address their audiences differently.’

How far is this true of The times and the daily mirror (close study products)?

In my opinion, I strongly agree with this statements to large extent.

Many newspapers, use the typography of serif to express the seriousness of their business and proposal of their contents on the front page, formal and definitely traditional. On the other hand, The Daily Mirror consists of sans serif to emphasise the informal and modern culture and perhaps give an interpretation of celebrity gossip.
For example, The Times mainly focuses on the category of politics as their front page content. Preventing them to be like the Daily Mirror, they have much of a more appealing view of their front page as it has a high capacity of coverage consisting of text heavy longer articles. Nevertheless, the Mirror has a front page full of mastheads, headlines and images.

The daily mirror deliberately endures their paper to behold the colour red to highly reinforce the stereotype of them being in support of the party: The Labour Party. Whereas, The Times is more conservative meaning they are in support of the opposing party against The Labour Party which is the Conservatives - in colour and design also.

The Mirror is more soft news, giving an interpretation of entertainment, gossip and celebrity. This gives an eye catching story to put on the front plate of a newspaper to give the reader a hint of suspense and therefore giving them the experience the true story of the article they have produced. This can be seen in the bond stars picture story on the front page and the way size and presentation of the royal family story.
The times is more heard news - politics, economics, international. As they are hard news, they are serious about their content they put in their newspapers. Criminal enquiry story on front of times - major politics story about a security leak at the top of government. Sri Lanka tourists/terror attack story. These story actually give an interpretation of them giving actually news of what is happening around the world which actually worth knowing for a good information.

Bothe The Times and The Daily mirror cover the royal family story- but as you can clearly see they approach the content they have from a different perspective. I can infer that from the Mirror, the royal story is presented as a family or celebrity gossip- it’s all first name terms ‘rifts between Wills and Harry’ which clearly expresses the informality. This meant they were referring to them as of they were their close relative of friend. In The Times, the same story is presented as a formal Royal event to mark war remembrance on Anzac Day in New Zealand. Even though the ‘Duke and duchess’ are given a strong emphasis as it is clearly shown.

Therefore, I strongly agree with this statement to a large extent, as i have shown in my writing that even though they have the same story/content they have present this story from different perspectives meaning they will give a different interpretation or impression toward their ‘celebrity story’.
